Enviado em 09/02/2010
Abridged Version - Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability California Human Rights Forum: We believe human rights are universal and must be based on dignity and respect for all persons, including persons with disabilities. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is a treaty that promotes quality of life, choice and inclusion of people with disabilities.

The California Department of Developmental Services - Consumer Advisory Committee (CAC) invited Kathy Guernsey, Education and Outreach Director of the U. S. International Council on Disabilities to lead a California statewide Human Rights Forum for advocates and community members to discuss the CRPD and its relevance to everyday life. Kathy links basic human rights to the treaty that increases awareness and application in plain language. The forum and video was a volunteer effort by all participants; USICD, CA DDS, Board Resource Center and statewide advocates.

The CAC believes that knowing your rights and applying them to everyday life is important for everyone. In order to live by their motto, My Life, My Way, members wanted to understand more about our basic rights as human beings. In partnership with the Board Resource Center, the CAC conducted a Human Rights forum through which this CRPD DVD and booklet were produced to educate more people about the significance of the treaty and human rights. Using their decision-making process called Think-Plan-Do, the CAC examined CRPD concepts and examples of human rights. Their experience guided the development of accessible DVD content and an easy-to-read companion booklet to more people may more understand and appreciate the import magnitude of this global treaty.

The CAC has sponsored or co-produced additional videos viewable on YouTube using search word: cac leadership. Additional advocacy tools and publications that provide insight on legal rights and strategies are available on the CA DDS Consumer Corner website: www.dds.ca.gov/consumercorner/publicatio ns.cfm
